Science Corner Inauguration

Science Corner was inaugurated under Science City Centre, Ibadan on 26^th October, 2017 under the Chairman Science City Centre, Ibadan Prof. G.B. Ogunmola FAS, with the collaboration of Initiative for Information Arts and Culture Development in Nigeria (IACD) under the Chairman and Board of Trustees Prof. O.O. Akinkugbe through the Director (IACD), Mrs. Adefemi Bucknor Arigbede.

The Opening Prayer of the Inauguration of Science Corner was said by one of the Member of Initiative for Information Arts and Culture Development in Nigeria. The introduction to the High table was done by Mr. Tolu Fagbure.

 REPORT AT THE INAUGURATION OF SCIENCE CORNER UNDER SCIENCE CITY CENTRE

A welcome Address was done by the President (IACD) Prof. Ayo Banjo, welcome all the guests and Schools invited to the Inauguration of Science Corner. In his statement he said Initiative for Information Arts and Culture Development in Nigeria was established to facilitate the access of growing numbers of the Nigerian population to the best that has been thought and written in world’s civilizations through the provision of books, through exhibitions, and through the sponsorship of concerts and Science City Centre has decided to collaborate in this endeavour of mutual interest. After, the Inauguration of Science Corner was done through the display of Banner of Science Corner under Science City Centre, Ibadan to all the guests and participants.

The Chairman of Science City Centre Prof. G.B. Ogunmola FAS in his response welcomes all the guests and participants to the Inauguration of Science Corner. He said Science City Centre (SCC), Ibadan is where Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation have the potential to leapfrog the many challenges that we face as a nation and also be able to use Science to build capacity, and also improve people’s life.

Science City Centre (SCC) is created to pursue initiatives for putting the world of Science in the society’s hands and the general public as they interacts in our programmes in Science education, Science awareness and Science communication in partnership with other stakeholders in Universities, Scientific Institution, Public and Private Organizations.

The Chairman Science City Centre Prof. G.B. Ogunmola FAS in his speech also said Science City Centre is delighted to participate to increase the scientific information activities of the Initiative for Information Arts and Culture Development in Nigeria programme and it is for this purpose we have the pleasure to collaborate with Initiative for Information Arts and Culture Development in Nigeria for the establishment of a Science Corner at the Initiative for Information Arts and Culture Development in Nigeria for the promotion of public awareness of Science and Technology activities in Ibadan and its environment.

Through Science Corner wish to mount Seminars, Science Exhibitions, Laboratory demonstration, School Quiz Programme in Science and all other activities for the creative development of the promotion of knowledge and products of Science in this environment. Science City Centre would run on a quarterly basis with the following themes “Matter, Energy, Life and Environment” and promote public understanding of Science and its many applications.

He said the Inauguration of Science Corner is to define the objectives of the Science Corner and provide support for the provision of information materials suitable for the Public understanding of Science area so defined that would let the City benefit from the work of all the Scientific Institutions in Ibadan and its environment and thus growing a Science community in the building of a knowledge society to banish ignorance and poverty.

Our top priority is to grow the pool of learners of today who will become the Scientists, Engineers, Health Specialists and Innovators of tomorrow.

At Science Corner, we believe that the passion for Science needs to be instilled at an early age: Primary School, Junior Secondary School to Senior in order to promote the interest and understanding of Mathematics and Science among young learners towards enhancing Science education and awareness to inculcate and promote Science values in our Society through various initiatives.

He said Scientists and the Public in Nigeria must interact and engage the society in increasing awareness of the role, and benefits of Science for support to national development and social wellbeing. Only then can we have the successful implementation of the National agenda and the desired socio-economic transformation change we need in Nigeria.

The Chairman of Science City Centre, Ibadan Prof. G.B. Ogunmola FAS quotes “Every Nation has its own bank of genius but society quite often either fail to recognize them in their lifetime or known them and not adequately equipped to manage them effectively. But not withstanding their prodigious ability continues to challenge their environment as they are unusual in intellectual exceptional in foresight uncompromising in principles and stands out unique in this society.

Engr (Dr.) Omololu Olunloyo a renowned and outstanding Mathematician gave the inauguration lecture on a topic “Arithmetic and the rest of Mathematics” in which all the guests and participants find it very explanatory and interesting. People were so excited the way he was using different methods in solving Mathematical equations. Comments were made by the participants and the guest lecturer gave answers to each of the questions asked by the audience.

A vote of thanks was done by the Director of Initiative for Information Arts and Culture Development in Nigeria Mrs. Adefemi Bucknor Arigbede, thanks all the guests and participants for their presence in acts that reinforces the confidence of the inauguration of Science Corner at the Initiative for Information Arts and Culture Development in Nigeria.
